Few ingredients in cosmetic formulation are as widely used, or as widely misunderstood, as shea butter. It shows up in everything from budget lotions to premium body butters, but the shea butter in a mass-market product and the shea butter a serious formulator reaches for are often worlds apart. This guide covers what shea butter actually is, what’s in it, what it does on skin and hair, and how to use it well.
Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nut of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa, formerly Butyrospermum parkii — the name you’ll see on an INCI ingredient list), a tree native to the savannah belt of West and Central Africa. The nuts are harvested, dried, crushed, and the fat pressed or extracted from the kernel. What you’re left with is a solid, ivory-to-cream-coloured fat that’s solid at room temperature and softens on contact with skin.

This is one of the most common points of confusion for new formulators. Unrefined (raw) shea butter retains its natural nutty scent, a yellowish tint in some grades, and slightly more of the naturally occurring plant compounds. Refined shea butter goes through additional processing — typically involving filtration and deodorising — which removes most of the scent and gives a more consistent, ivory-white colour and texture batch to batch.
Refining does reduce trace levels of some minor natural compounds, but the core fatty acid and unsaponifiable content that drives shea butter’s performance on skin remains intact. For most commercial and semi-commercial formulation, refined shea butter is the practical choice: it’s more stable, more consistent, and won’t compete with fragrance or essential oils the way an unrefined batch can.
Shea butter’s performance on skin comes down to two things: its fatty acid profile and its unsaponifiable content.

What genuinely sets shea butter apart from most other cosmetic butters is its unusually high unsaponifiable content — commonly cited in the range of 5–17%, well above butters like cocoa or mango butter. This fraction includes triterpene alcohols and tocopherols (naturally occurring vitamin E), compounds that don’t turn into soap during saponification and are widely credited with shea butter’s skin-conditioning reputation beyond simple occlusion.
Shea butter’s primary mechanism on skin is straightforward: as an occlusive-emollient fat, it sits on the skin’s surface and slows transepidermal water loss, helping skin retain its own moisture. That’s the same basic mechanism as most rich body butters and balms, and it’s the reason shea butter has remained a formulation staple for decades rather than a passing trend.
Beyond simple occlusion, its high unsaponifiable and tocopherol content is generally understood to contribute additional skin-conditioning benefit, which is part of why shea butter tends to feel different — more “nourishing,” in formulator language — than a purely occlusive ingredient like plain petroleum jelly.
The same occlusive, moisture-sealing properties that work on skin apply to hair and scalp. Shea butter is widely used in leave-in treatments, deep conditioners and scalp balms, particularly for coarser or drier hair textures that benefit from a heavier sealant. Because it’s solid at room temperature, it’s typically melted or blended into an oil phase (with a lighter carrier oil like Grapeseed Oil) rather than applied neat, for easier distribution through hair.
Shea butter is generally rated low-to-moderate on comedogenicity scales — it’s not considered a high-risk pore-clogging ingredient for most skin types, but individual skin response varies considerably, and very oily or acne-prone skin may find it too rich as a standalone product. As with any new ingredient, patch-testing on a small area before wider use is the sensible approach, particularly for anyone with a known nut allergy (see the safety note below).
Shea nut is botanically a tree nut, and while documented allergic reactions to topically applied shea butter are uncommon — the allergenic proteins are largely removed during the fat extraction process — anyone with a known tree nut allergy should patch-test before use and consult relevant safety guidance for their specific market before including it in a product intended for sale. Both are solid cosmetic butters, but shea butter generally has a softer texture and higher unsaponifiable content, while cocoa butter is harder, has a distinct chocolate aroma (in unrefined form), and a different fatty acid balance skewed more toward stearic and palmitic acid.
Like any natural fat, shea butter can oxidise over time, especially with heat and light exposure — you’ll notice a change in smell before it becomes unusable. Proper storage and, in finished formulations, an antioxidant like vitamin E, extend usable life significantly.
