Shea butter and mango butter get lumped together constantly — both are solid, plant-derived butters used in body care, both come from African trees, both look roughly similar in the tub. But formulate with them side by side and the differences become obvious fast.
Texture straight out of the tub
Refined Shea Butter is soft enough to scoop with a spoon at room temperature and softens further the moment it touches skin. Mango Butter is noticeably firmer in the tub — it holds its shape better, which is part of why it’s a popular choice for solid formats like lip balms and deodorant sticks where you need structure, not just richness.
How they feel on skin
This is where the real difference shows up. Shea butter melts to a rich, cushioning after-feel that some skin types (and South African summers) find a little heavy on its own. Mango butter melts to something noticeably lighter and less greasy — it still moisturises, but it gets out of the way faster. If you’ve had customer feedback that a shea-heavy body butter feels “too much,” swapping in mango butter for part of the butter phase is often the fix.
Where each one shines
Use Shea Butter as your primary butter when the goal is maximum richness — think winter body butters, balms for very dry skin, or as a superfatting agent in soap-making. Use Mango Butter when you want structure without weight — sticks, bars, and lighter whipped butters aimed at warmer climates or oilier skin types.
Or use both
Most experienced formulators don’t actually choose one over the other — they blend them. A whipped body butter built on roughly two-thirds shea to one-third mango gets the richness of shea with a lighter finish than shea alone would give you. Whip the blend with a lightweight carrier oil like Grapeseed Oil and a touch of Vitamin E Acetate for oxidative stability, and you’ve got a genuinely well-balanced base.
