This is the one step new formulators are most tempted to skip — and the one that matters most. Any product containing water is a viable environment for mould, yeast and bacteria to grow, often invisibly, long before a product looks or smells “off.”
Why “natural” doesn’t mean “safe without a preservative”
Water-based formulas — lotions, creams, toners, anything with an aqueous phase — need a preservative regardless of how natural or clean the rest of the ingredient list is. Anhydrous products like a whipped body butter or an oil blend are the exception, since microbes need water to grow. If your formula has any water in it at all, that exception doesn’t apply.
Broad-spectrum is non-negotiable
A preservative needs to protect against bacteria, mould and yeast — not just one category. Phenoxyethanol on its own is a reliable, broad-spectrum, widely compatible starting point used across a huge range of formulation types.
