Cold-process soap-making has its own ingredient logic, distinct from lotion or balm formulation. These seven raw materials cover the core jobs — base oils, hardness, superfatting, texture and scent.
1. Sunflower Oil (base oil)
Sunflower Oil is an affordable, widely used base oil for soap, contributing the bulk of a bar’s oil phase without pushing up cost significantly.
2. Castor Oil (lather booster)
Castor Oil is prized in soap recipes specifically for the creamy, stable lather it contributes even at a relatively small percentage of the total oil phase.
3. Stearic Acid (hardening agent)
Stearic Acid adds real hardness to a finished bar, helping it hold its shape and last longer in the shower rather than turning soft and mushy.
4. Refined Shea Butter (superfatting)
Adding Refined Shea Butter at the end of the soap-making process (a technique called superfatting) leaves extra conditioning fat in the finished bar that doesn’t get converted to soap, adding a noticeably more moisturising after-feel.
5. Kaolin Clay (texture and mildness)
Kaolin Clay is a popular soap additive for a silky bar texture and a gentle, mild cleansing boost, without the intensity of a stronger clay or charcoal.
6. A fragrance oil suited to cold-process soap
Our fragrance oil range spans fruity, floral and gourmand profiles — check that your chosen fragrance is specifically formulated to hold up in cold-process soap, since not all fragrance oils behave predictably in a high-pH environment.
7. Vitamin E Acetate (shelf life)
Even in soap, oils can oxidise over time and develop rancid spots known as “dreaded orange spots” (DOS) among soap makers. A small amount of Vitamin E Acetate in the oil phase helps extend a bar’s usable shelf life.
What’s not on this list
We don’t currently stock sodium hydroxide (lye) — the ingredient that actually turns oils into soap through saponification. You’ll need to source that separately, and always follow proper lye safety handling procedures.
