Whipped body butter is one of the most approachable products for a first-time formulator to make: no complex emulsion chemistry, no exact pH targets, just fat, whipped to a light, spreadable texture. Here’s a base recipe to work from.
What you’ll need
For a basic 200g batch:
- 100g Refined Shea Butter
- 50g Mango Butter
- 40g Grapeseed Oil (or another lightweight oil)
- 1g Vitamin E Acetate (as an antioxidant)
- A double boiler or heatproof bowl over simmering water
- An electric hand mixer or stand mixer
Step 1: Melt the butters
Combine the shea and mango butter in a heatproof bowl over a double boiler. Melt gently — you don’t need full liquid, just soft enough to combine. Overheating butters unnecessarily can affect their natural texture on cooling.
Step 2: Add your oil and antioxidant
Once melted, stir in the carrier oil and Vitamin E Acetate. The vitamin E isn’t just a nice-to-have — it genuinely slows oxidation of the oil phase, extending shelf life.
Step 3: Cool before whipping
This is the step most beginners rush. Let the mixture cool at room temperature, or briefly in the fridge, until it’s opaque and starting to firm up around the edges — soft-set, not liquid. Whipping while still liquid gives you a flat, oily result instead of a light, fluffy one.
Step 4: Whip
Whip on high speed for several minutes until the mixture turns pale and fluffy, scraping down the sides as needed. If it starts to separate or look grainy, it’s usually a sign the mixture was too warm going in — pop it back in the fridge for a few minutes and whip again.
Step 5: Package and rest
Spoon into clean jars and let the butter fully set at room temperature before sealing — trapping residual warmth can lead to condensation inside the jar.
A note on shelf life
A butter-and-oil-only formula like this one is anhydrous (no water), so it doesn’t need a traditional preservative the way a lotion would. It’s still a good idea to use clean tools, store it away from direct heat, and use it within 6–12 months.
