Every shampoo, body wash and facial cleanser starts with the same basic decision: which surfactant (or blend of surfactants) does the actual cleansing. The options split roughly into two camps, and the choice affects mildness, foam, and how a formula gets marketed.
The plant-derived “glucoside” family
Decyl Glucoside, Coco Glucoside and Lauryl Glucoside are all sugar-derived, mild surfactants with a reputation for gentleness. Decyl glucoside in particular is mild enough for baby and sensitive-skin formulas. These are the surfactants formulators reach for when a “naturally derived” ingredient list matters to the brand, without giving up meaningful foam or cleansing performance.
Amphoteric co-surfactants
Cocamidopropyl Betaine is coconut-derived and amphoteric, meaning it doesn’t clean particularly well on its own — its real job is boosting the foam and mildness of whatever primary surfactant it’s paired with. It’s rarely the star of a formula, but it’s a common supporting ingredient in both natural and conventional surfactant blends.
The classic synthetic workhorses
SLES 70% (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) is one of the most widely used cleansing surfactants in the industry, generating the rich, familiar foam most consumers associate with shampoo. AOS-40 is a similarly strong-foaming alternative. Both are effective, well-understood, and significantly cheaper to formulate with at scale than glucoside-based systems.
Foam isn’t the same as clean
A common misconception worth correcting: foam volume doesn’t directly correlate with cleansing effectiveness. Some of the mildest surfactants on this list, like decyl glucoside, foam less generously than SLES but clean perfectly well — the foam is largely a sensory cue, not a performance measure.
How to decide
If your brand is positioned around naturally-derived ingredients, build your cleansing base around a glucoside (Decyl, Coco or Lauryl) with Cocamidopropyl Betaine as a co-surfactant for extra mildness and foam. If cost and familiar, generous lather are the priority, SLES 70% or AOS-40 remain the industry-standard choice for a reason.
Test on the skin type you’re formulating for
Mildness perception varies by skin type and by how a surfactant blend is diluted and buffered. Always test a finished formula — not just the raw surfactant — before finalising a recipe for sale.
